Dr. Ruan provides comprehensive pain management and rehabilitation at Physicians¡¯ Pain Specialists of Alabama (PPSA), Mobile, Alabama where he is co- owner and co-Medical Director of PPSA. He also serves as Clinical Associate Professor at the Dept. of Anesthesiology, School of Medicine, LSU Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA. He graduated from Shandong Medical Univ. (Jinan, China) in 1988, after attending the highly competitive English/Medicine class (class 82.1). In 2011, Dr. Ruan changed his nick name to SC82.1 (Supercharged 82.1) in order to honor his class and the medical school he graduated from. Dr. Ruan completed his PMR residency training in Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals in 2002 and finished an interventional pain management fellowship in the Dept. of Anesthesiology, Univ. of Michigan Medical Center in 2003. To reach the fully ¡°Supercharged¡± status, set by him to honor class 82.1, Dr. Ruan aimed at becoming the physician with the most medical board/subspecialty board certifications in the US history. By Oct. 2011, he had achieved 7 board/subspecialty board certifications including American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR); American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM); American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM); American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM); American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP); Subspecialty Board of Pain Medicine under American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR) and American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), and Subspecialty Board of Neuromuscular Medicine under American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR) and American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (ABPN). Dr. Ruan became a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP) by World Institute of Pain (WIP) in 2006. In May 2012, Dr. Ruan was awarded the Certificate by the World Record Academy for setting the world record of being the physician with the most medical board/subspecialty board certifications. In March 2013, Dr. Ruan broke his own aforementioned World Record after passing his 8th Board Certification Exam to become boarded by American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. He has been elected to the Board of Directors of American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP). He has published numerous articles in peer reviewed medical journals such as ¡°Pain Medicine¡±, ¡°Pain Physician¡±, ¡°American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation¡±, "Journal of Opioid Management", etc. Dr. Ruan has been an Editorial Consultant for ¡°Pain Physician¡±, the official journal of American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) since 2007. Dr. Ruan is also on the Editorial Board for both ¡°Current Drug Abuse Reviews¡± and ¡°Analgesia & Resuscitation: Current Research¡±. Dr. Ruan¡¯s clinical research interests are in the area s of intrathecal infusion pump for pain control, novel approaches in conducting outpatient functional epidural infusion trials, opioid analgesia optimization, and opioid risk mitigation. Dr. Ruan also takes a leadership role in National and State professional organizations. He is the current President of Alabama Society of Addiction Medicine, and President of Alabama Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. Dr. Ruan is also the founder and executive director of ¡°International Institute of Pain & Rehabilitation¡± (IIPR), a non-profit organization with its mission of promoting pain awareness in the public, facilitating functional restoration in patients and their family members, and promoting clinical research and education.
